Chapter 388: A Deterrent That Is Hard to Ignore
During an urgent mission, Su Ming was discovered by the enemy and placed in a dangerous situation. To protect the intelligence, he threw himself into a desperate situation without hesitation. With his extraordinary wit and deep insight into the enemy's psychology, he narrowly escaped. Struggling on the brink of life and death, Su Ming's heart remained steadfast. Even if it meant saving himself, he would fight for more opportunities for those innocent people, to fight and survive.
Every adventure he took, every challenge he faced, was a test of his inner convictions. Throughout this protracted war, Su Ming was no longer the innocent young man he once was. His eyes revealed a maturity and decisiveness, as well as a deeper understanding of human nature.
Su Ming's heartbeat remained strong and rhythmic. The city in the dark night was still ripped apart by explosions and gunfire, but he seemed to have long since grown accustomed to the roar. After each mission, he would stand alone on the rooftop, gazing at the ruins in the distance. The shattered buildings, the collapsed streets, the corners of the city engulfed in flames, seemed part of his heart. No one knew that the young man who once embraced ideals and was full of passion had now hidden all that passion, leaving only calmness and caution, even numbness.
That day, Su Ming, like every other, received a new mission. It wasn't a complicated one: simply infiltrating an enemy supply depot and sabotaging a shipment of vital supplies. However, the significance behind this mission was far greater than that. It seemed as if a larger conspiracy lay hidden beneath the surface, and as the executor, he had already been drawn into it.
"You know what you have to do, right?" The superior in charge of liaison said to him in a calm tone before the day's mission.
Su Ming nodded, his eyes not lingering on the other person, as if he was already accustomed to this way of talking: "I understand."
Yet, his heart wasn't as calm as his outward appearance. While the mission might seem simple, he knew he was constantly carrying immense danger. Every expedition deep behind enemy lines filled him with an indescribable sense of oppression. Every moment of tension felt like a fragile string, ready to snap at any moment. Yet, he knew he had no choice; the path of justice had already led him too far.
At that moment on the rooftop, Su Ming closed his eyes, reflecting on the journey that had led him to this point. He remembered the winter night after his mother's death from illness, when he stood at the door, watching her hearse drive away. At that moment, his emotions were incredibly complex. His mother had always been his strongest support, but her passing had taken away a certain sense of dependence from his heart. From that moment on, he resolved to shoulder all responsibility, carrying with him the warmth and love he once had, into this battle.
Yet, each step in the battle gradually alienated him. His former passion and impulsiveness were slowly replaced by caution and silence. He no longer questioned the starry nights, as he had in his youth, "Why am I fighting?" He knew the answer had likely been lost in the long years, leaving only an increasingly narrow path.
At this moment, the ringing of the phone broke his thoughts.
"Are you ready?" There was a low voice on the other end of the phone, with indescribable majesty.
"Ready." Su Ming's answer was concise and firm. He knew that every time he received such an order, it meant that he would embark on an unknown journey again.
"Remember, you may face unprecedented pressure this time. You must always be vigilant and never take it lightly at any time." There seemed to be a warning in the man's voice, but also some inexplicable comfort.
"I know." Su Ming said.
After hanging up the phone, Su Ming took a deep breath and stood up. His figure seemed strangely lonely under the dim light, like a lone wolf abandoned by the city. Every mission brought him closer to the abyss. He knew that sooner or later, he would be swallowed by the abyss, but he persisted, because he could not turn back.
Late at night, the shadows of the warehouse made everything seem especially tense. Su Ming moved through the darkness, his movements light and practiced. He no longer had the hesitation and anxiety he once had. Each movement was like a routine practiced countless times: precise, decisive, and without room for error.
He lurked in the shadows, quietly observing the warehouse's structure. Just as he was about to execute his plan of destruction, he suddenly heard soft footsteps behind him. Su Ming's heartbeat quickened, and he instinctively moved closer to a wall, staring nervously behind him.
He lowered his head, quietly reaching out his fingers to pick up the dagger at his waist. It was a weapon he never left behind. Although he had used it many times over the years, the feeling of touching life still chilled him every time he used it.
The footsteps were getting closer and closer, and finally stopped not far from him.
"Who are you?" A deep voice sounded in the darkness.
Su Ming held his breath, his heartbeat practically pounding in his ears. He watched the man's footsteps intently and quietly took a few steps back. His hand had already tightened around his dagger, but he didn't strike immediately. After all, calmness was most needed at this moment.
The figure in the darkness slowly approached, and Su Ming's eyes narrowed slightly. The man's features were almost blurred in the dim environment. But the low tone of his voice left Su Ming with no doubt that the other person was not an insignificant passerby, but another "actor" lurking in this city.
"What are you doing here?" the man asked again, with a hint of subtle vigilance in his tone.
Su Ming smiled slightly, his voice calm and powerful: "Send something."
"Delivering something?" The man was obviously suspicious of the answer and lowered his guard slightly.
Just as he was getting closer, Su Ming moved quickly. The dagger slashed through the air in an instant, precisely slicing the silence in the air. At the same time, his voice remained calm: "Don't move."
The man suddenly stopped, a flicker of surprise in his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. He didn't immediately resist, but turned to look at Su Ming, as if weighing something.
"You are……?"
"I'm not who you think I am." Su Ming replied, his deep voice carrying a deterrent force that was hard to ignore.
The man remained silent for a moment, seemingly deciding whether to signal for help. But at that moment, Su Ming pressed down hard on his neck, suppressing all his movements. Tension permeated the air, as if the world would crumble in the next second because of this tacit game of chess.
