Chapter 498: A Dead End
Chapter 498: A Dead End
"No..." Su Ming whispered, a cruel look flashing in his eyes, "He can't die!"
He bit his lower lip so hard it nearly drew blood. Regret and guilt surged within him, but he had no time to process them. He had to let go of all emotion and make the clearest judgment possible right now. Otherwise, his and Zheng Yaoxian's fate would be buried in these dark streets.
"I...what should I do?" Su Ming whispered to himself. Everything in front of him became extremely blurry. It seemed like there were thousands of voices shouting in his mind, but none of them could calm him down.
He looked around at the empty streets and the still air, as if everything was shrouded in a silent oppression. Countless street corners seemed to harbor dangerous eyes, enemies lurking in the darkness, ready to launch a fatal attack on him and Zheng Yaoxian at any moment.
"Can't stop..." He whispered again with all his might, his mouth twitching slightly, his eyes beginning to turn a little crazy. Every time he saw Zheng Yaoxian's face, he couldn't help but recall the most profound memories of his life - those years fighting side by side, those moments of fighting side by side, those moments of life and death.
They had fought countless missions together. No one could understand the deep trust they shared, the reliance they felt in these endless nights. Whether it was life or death, or battle, they never hesitated in each other's decisions, but leaned on each other's shoulders, heading into the unknown tomorrow.
Yet now, standing in this crumbling city, Su Ming suddenly felt powerless. He had imagined himself countless times standing on this dead end, thinking of Zheng Yaoxian's back, the unwavering faith behind him. But today, he truly realized that the pain of living far outweighed the fear of death.
His gaze grew fiercer, his heartbeat quicker. His life was drawing to a close, and he knew time was running out. He strained his head again, looking into Zheng Yaoxian's face, his gaze deep and filled with boundless determination.
"You can't die, Yaoxian," Su Ming whispered, tears welling in his eyes. He shook his head fiercely, telling himself clearly that he had to find a hiding place and rescue Zheng Yaoxian.
He didn't have time to dwell on these meaningless things. The remaining strength in his hands was barely enough to sustain him. He quickly gathered his thoughts, and suddenly, an idea struck him, and he made a decision. He would find a camp, a place that could support them. It was their only hope, their only refuge.
He didn't give himself more time and was about to leave.
However, just as he was about to start, he heard a slight sound of footsteps behind him.
"Who is it?" Su Ming turned around almost reflexively, his eyes as sharp as a knife.
The man stopped not far from him, his figure slightly blurry, as if hiding in the shadows. His face couldn't be seen clearly, but the hostility solidified in the air, carrying a chilling aura.
Su Ming's fingers trembled slightly. He did not take action immediately, but stood still and stared at that direction.
He could feel the air growing heavier at this moment, as if every particle of it was filled with the aura of danger. The enemy had already found their tracks, and this man was undoubtedly an opponent that should not be underestimated.
"Are you here to kill me, or do you want to take him away?" Su Ming spoke coldly, his voice low and carrying a threat that could not be ignored.
The other person's figure swayed slightly, but there was no response.
Su Ming's heart skipped a beat. His intuition told him that this person wasn't hostile, but rather, more like someone desperate to gain access to them. Every second of pause made Su Ming's heartbeat quicken. He had to make a quick judgment: friend or foe? Otherwise, they might not even have a chance to breathe.
He continued to approach slowly, his eyes like knives. "I don't want to waste time. You'd better tell me your intentions now."
Su Ming stood there, his eyes sharp as knives, the sound of his heartbeat drowning out all the surrounding noise. Every muscle in his body tensed, every movement in the air a matter of seconds. The man remained in the shadows, as still as if he didn't even exist. His eyes fixed on the darkness. Though he couldn't make out the man's face, his presence was unmistakable. Su Ming knew that in this moment of confrontation, neither side could afford to back down.
"You don't have time for these tricks," Su Ming whispered, a cold glint in his eyes. Without waiting for a response, he quickly lowered himself, grasping Zheng Yaoxian's shoulders with both hands, and forced himself to calm down.
Zheng Yaoxian's temperature gradually rose, his pulse beating like a drumbeat. Every weak gasp seemed to remind Su Ming that time was against them. An inexplicable anxiety surged in his heart, as if the whole world was spinning rapidly in this darkness, and only he and Zheng Yaoxian were trapped in this endless loneliness, unable to escape.
"Can't stop." He warned himself silently.
The man still didn't respond. He simply stood there quietly, as if observing something, as if waiting for something. Su Ming's eyes grew colder, but his mind raced with possibilities. He wondered if the enemy had already sent someone to follow them. Was this person a friend or foe? Every speculation stabbed him like a sharp knife, forcing him to remain vigilant.
He even began to wonder if he was too anxious, if he had missed some important clue. After all, Zheng Yaoxian's injuries were getting worse and he needed medical help urgently, and he was caught in a standoff that was beyond his control. Every second counted, every second.
"No matter who you are." Su Ming finally suppressed the doubts in his heart and said in a cold voice, "You'd better give me a reason to stand here and tell me what you want to do."
Silence is still silence.
Su Ming clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white from the strain. He knew full well that the situation before him could not be delayed even a moment longer. If the other party was truly an enemy, then his current position would be doomed to failure. However, if this person had no ill intentions, then he must make a quick decision, set aside his hostility, and resolve the current predicament.
He took a deep breath and forced himself to calm down. The murderous look in his eyes faded, leaving only an endless calmness and composure. "Are you still not going to show up? If you really have something to say, come out."
Finally, the figure in the shadows moved slightly, as if angered by Su Ming's tone, or forced to remain silent by the oppressive feeling.
