Chapter 522 Rapid Breathing
Chapter 522 Rapid Breathing
Su Ming sneered and watched the two men leave in disarray. He didn't release the dagger in his hand until their figures completely disappeared into the darkness. He turned his head and looked at the young man who was still standing there trembling.
"Are you okay?" His voice was low, but there was a hint of concern in his tone.
The young man nodded, his forehead covered with cold sweat: "Thank...thank you..." He swallowed, and the dagger in his hand fell to the ground.
"Don't thank me too soon." Su Ming took a deep breath and put the dagger back into his coat. He knew that the previous conflict had only temporarily resolved the crisis, but those people were clearly not the type to let it go. He patted the young man's shoulder, his tone a warning: "Remember, you'd better not talk about what happened tonight, otherwise you might get into even bigger trouble."
The young man nodded repeatedly, his eyes filled with gratitude and fear: "I understand... I won't say anything."
Su Ming nodded without saying anything more. He glanced around, confirming there were no other anomalies, and then turned and left the alley. His steps remained steady, but a huge wave of emotion surged within him.
"Is all this a coincidence, or is there another purpose?" He couldn't help but ask himself again. The darkness of this city seemed deeper than he had imagined, but he had to keep moving forward, even if danger was waiting for him at the next moment.
Su Ming didn't feel relieved by the conflict; instead, his inner tension and anxiety intensified. He knew he had only temporarily resolved the immediate problem, and the underlying threat might not be over yet. The two robbers' constant mention of "next time" etched itself deeply into Su Ming's mind, as if reminding him that this dangerous game had only just begun.
He felt a flame of anger smoldering within him, especially at the look of gratitude and fear the young man had just given him. In that moment, Su Ming clearly realized that he hadn't truly "rescued" the man, but had instead plunged him back into an even more dangerous vortex. He disliked being in this passive role, and he didn't want anyone else to fall victim to the trouble he had unintentionally provoked.
Su Ming's heart tightened. He knew he couldn't continue like this, especially with the "next time" those men mentioned. This meant he had become a target, or rather, the undercurrent of this game had begun. And he couldn't avoid becoming a part of it.
"I should go find out who they are." Su Ming secretly decided to give chase and resolve all uncertainties. He had to face this turbulent situation personally and could no longer avoid it. The uneasiness and anger in his heart made him no longer hesitate. He gripped the dagger tighter, quickened his pace, and swiftly chased in the direction where the two men had disappeared.
At the corner of the street, the night was still thick. Beneath the streetlight ahead, a cold wind stirred the empty street, bringing a hint of chill. Su Ming followed their disappearing steps, his mind replaying the previous scene: the figures of the two men, their tone, and the gleaming knife. His heart grew heavier, realizing that his actions were no longer simply to help a stranger, but to uncover a deeper conspiracy. The closer he got to the unknown truth, the more oppressive he felt.
Finally, he passed through several quiet alleys and arrived at a wider street. The two figures reappeared in front of him, apparently unaware that they were being followed, and continued to whisper to each other. Su Ming held his breath and slowly approached.
He heard one of them say, "I didn't expect to meet that kind of person this time. What bad luck." The voice was low and contained a hint of dissatisfaction.
Another person immediately responded, "Stop talking. That guy was so quick just now that he almost made us flip over. He's not someone you can easily mess with. Remember, don't get into trouble like that easily in the future."
"You're right." The man in front paused, as if thinking of something. "But we have to find out how he knew that, just in case..."
"What if?" asked another.
The man in front of him didn't answer immediately. Instead, he stopped and looked around, his eyes darting around as if on guard against something. Su Ming's heart tightened, realizing he couldn't get too close. He immediately stopped and retreated into the shadows under the streetlight, trying not to be noticed.
After a few seconds of silence, the man in front whispered, "That kid is not an ordinary person. We have to be careful about the connections behind him." There was a hint of vigilance in his tone, and it was obvious that he had not let his guard down.
Su Ming stood in the shadows, his heart beating faster. He sensed a foreboding aura. The two men before him were no ordinary people. Their words, "That boy is no ordinary man," in particular, weighed heavily on Su Ming's heart. His intuition told him that this confrontation might be more than just a minor street fight.
"What should we do then?" another person asked in confusion.
"Let's see if he's still following us first, and then we'll make a decision after we confirm." The man in front replied coldly, "If he really came prepared, then we must take him seriously."
As soon as the words fell, the two continued walking a few more steps. As if sensing something, they suddenly quickened their pace, heading towards a nearby building. Su Ming's heartbeat quickened; he knew things were getting more complicated. A faint, unusual aura emanated from the building, seemingly connected to the identities of the two men. Feeling a surge of anxiety, Su Ming decided he couldn't let the two men enter the building unharmed, or he would never understand the truth behind it.
He took a deep breath, his eyes determined, and scanned the surroundings. He quickly chose a different direction and turned into another alley on the street. He wanted to bypass this street as quickly as possible and approach the building from the side to see if he could find more clues.
The alley was eerily quiet; Su Ming could almost hear his own rapid breathing. The air around him was chilly and damp, as if he had entered an unfamiliar territory. He observed his surroundings as he walked, pondering his next move. He no longer had any hesitation; he had to find the crucial evidence to uncover the truth behind the undercurrent.
Su Ming's steps gradually grew heavier, and every ripple in the air seemed to remind him that he was heading towards a point of no return. The chase and the words of those people just now lingered in his mind, making him unable to calm down. The building exuded a faint aura of danger, and with each step he took, his alertness grew stronger.
