Chapter 115 The Moon is Angry
Chapter 115 The Moon is Angry
Bai Ling said with a smile, "Okay, I won't pinch Yue's ears in front of so many people anymore."
Yue glared at Bai Ling with a hint of resentment and then ignored him.
This was the tribe's first hunt of the year, and the hunting team returned with a full catch, so it was only right to celebrate.
The hunted game was divided up, with half going to the members of the hunting team and the other half to the clan. Since the game had been outside for so many days, the meat had been salted. Bai Ling's family received more than 200 jin of meat and a large piece of animal hide.
Feng said, "There's still a lot of meat at home. We'll make it into jerky tomorrow so it'll be easier to preserve. We've also tanned the hides and stored them away. We'll take them out when we need them later."
No one in the family objected. Feng and Cang put the things away, while Bai Ling accompanied Yue back to the cave where he had put the things.
There were also quite a few things in the cave: animal meat, animal hides, cassava, and some pots and pans, which occupied a corner of the cave.
"Moon, when will you go hunting next?" Bai Ling asked.
Yue said, "I don't know yet, but it should be soon."
Bai Ling was feeling a little down. He gave a soft "oh" and then fell silent.
Yue glanced up at Bai Ling stealthily, noticing that he was clearly in a bad mood. Her eyes flickered. "Ling, what's wrong? You seem a little unhappy. Is something the matter?"
Bai Ling was naturally unhappy. He and Yue had just met, but they would be parting ways in just a few days.
However, he couldn't tell Yue about this; doing so would make him seem petty.
"It's nothing," Bai Ling lied.
Yue stared at Bai Ling, her eyes unblinking: "Are you really alright?"
Bai Ling almost couldn't hold on any longer, but because she didn't want to be too direct, she whispered, "I still have something to do."
Yue asked, "What is it?"
Bai Ling's voice lowered even further: "That's right, that's right..."
Bai Ling couldn't quite say the rest because the environment, the time, and the place were all wrong.
When he confided his innermost thoughts to the moon, it should have been in a beautiful setting with blue skies, white clouds, a gentle breeze, and birdsong, not in this dimly lit, rudimentary cave.
Bai Ling took a deep breath and said, "I just encountered a small problem while farming, but I've already resolved it." Bai Ling lied.
Yue's long eyelashes drooped down. He glanced at Bai Ling out of the corner of his eye but said nothing. He simply turned around and silently began to pack his things.
Bai Ling knew that Yue was unhappy again, but he had no idea why.
He tried to find topics to talk about with Yue: "Yue, I have already planted your field for you. I planted cassava, wheat, sorghum, soybeans, mung beans, and some vegetables."
Yue softly said "Oh".
Bai Ling then said, "Yue, I plan to build a brick kiln specifically for firing bricks. I've prepared all the adobe bricks and the foundation has been dug. Construction will officially begin tomorrow. What do you think?"
Yue Yiran softly uttered an "oh".
Bai Ling: "Yue, I don't know where to build the house either. We need to choose a place carefully. Let's take a look together and see where it's suitable."
This time, Yue didn't even utter a sound.
Bai Ling knew this was a big deal, so he cautiously moved closer to Yue to observe the expression on her face.
Yue's face was expressionless. His eyes were half-closed, and his long eyelashes cast a small shadow on his eyelids. He was like a calm lake, not even a ripple could be stirred by the wind.
Bai Ling was at a loss for what to do. Yue was not happy; he seemed angry.
He was really angry.
*
Since meeting Yue, Bai Ling has never seen Yue angry.
Yue actually has a very good temper. He rarely gets angry, let alone unhappy. Even if Yue doesn't show any expression in the past, Bai Ling knows that he is not unhappy or upset. He is just a bit indifferent and used to being expressionless.
But today, Yue got angry!
This was unprecedented, a blow to Bai Ling akin to Mars colliding with Earth, and he simply couldn't think of any way to resolve it.
Bai Ling was in a panic.
He thought about it for a while, then asked, "Yue, are you angry?"
Bai Ling thought Yue wouldn't answer, but to her surprise, Yue actually nodded.
Bai Ling immediately realized something: "Yue, why are you angry?" His expression became cautious and pitiful. "Yue, did I make you angry?"
“If I make you angry, you can hit me or scold me, but you must not stay angry by yourself. Holding in your anger is bad for your health.”
Yue looked up at Bai Ling: "Hit you or scold you? I'm not an unreasonable person, why would I hit you or scold you?"
Yue remained expressionless, her icy blue eyes fixed coldly on Bai Ling. However, Bai Ling, who was familiar with Yue's emotions, knew that Yue's mood had improved slightly.
Yue was still angry, but not as angry as before.
Bai Ling smiled and said, "Yes, it was my fault. Please forgive me this time, Yue."
To everyone's surprise, Yue snorted coldly and said, "I won't forgive."
Yue's words were so direct, stating that she would not forgive Bai Ling, which left Bai Ling helpless.
Bai Ling asked naively, "Why not forgive him?"
Yue's hands were clasped together. Although her face was expressionless, she was as nervous as a soldier about to go into battle.
“Because you forgot to say something to me,” Yue said, “something very, very important.”
Bai Ling immediately asked, "What did you say?"
“You didn’t say that you missed me a lot during the days we were apart,” Yue said in a very serious tone, even though it was a somewhat ambiguous statement. “Ling, I miss you a lot. I’ve thought about you every single day during the days we were apart.”
There was nothing wrong when they first set off, and there was nothing wrong even when they were on the road. But when night fell, Yue was surprised to find that she missed Ling terribly.
The world was completely silent. Even the roars of beasts that we used to hear occasionally when we went out hunting were gone. The only sounds we could hear were the conversations of our tribesmen. All we could see was the pitch-black night sky, and there wasn’t even any moonlight.
A feeling called longing rose from her heart. Even though they had just separated, Yue already missed Ling.
He missed Ling's face, Ling's smile, Ling's bright eyes when she looked at him, the delicious food Ling cooked for him, the sound of Ling speaking to him, and every single moment they spent together.
I miss you so much that it feels like my heart is aching.
But amidst this pain, there was also a hint of sweetness.
It's a bittersweet feeling; that probably describes Yue's current mood.
