Chapter 59 Caught

Chapter 59 Caught

"Everyone, please stop eating the food sold by this unscrupulous vendor!"

"Don't eat any rotten or rotten meat; you'll ruin your health!"

The couple started bickering at the door, like actors in a play. Yang Xiu couldn't help but swallow her saliva as she looked at the bowls of oily dishes on the table, while Wen Youcai had already wiped his mouth several times.

The diners couldn't help but put down their chopsticks and ask them, "We're eating just fine! What could be wrong?"

Wen Youcai slapped his thigh and hurriedly said, "The owner of this shop is my second uncle. Yesterday, my grandmother came to ask for her retirement money, and my second aunt gave it to her directly!"

The diners listened intently, chattering away.

"If they can be so heartless towards their own mothers, then they'll be even less likely to succeed in business! You all better watch out!"

Wen Youcai acted as if he was doing all this for their own good, and a few people were swayed by his words and got up to leave.

Wen Zizhou stepped forward and punched Wen Youcai in the face. "What nonsense are you spouting! Believe me or not, I'll punch you!"

He only went in to get a bowl, and those two suddenly appeared out of nowhere. If he had come out a few steps later, he would have driven several people away with his words.

Yang Xiu stepped forward to support Wen Youcai, her face filled with heartache, and said, "Third cousin, how could you lay a hand on your younger brother!"

Wen Zizhou snorted coldly, "I really don't know what's so great about this."

How could his light punch have left him in such a half-dead state?

Yang Xiu stood at the shop entrance demanding an explanation, and more and more people gathered to watch the spectacle. Wen Luozhi stood at the door with her arms crossed and a group of people watching the two of them put on a show.

"You two are really good at scheming," Wen Luozhi said, picking her ear. She walked up to Yang Xiu and pointed at Wen Youcai, who was leaning on her shoulder. "How could my third brother, who can't even lift a finger, be beaten like this?"

"Watch closely, this is what it looks like when you're really hurt!"

She quickly swung her fists and slammed them twice into Wen Youcai's stomach, knocking him into a curled-up position like a shrimp.

"Ah! Husband!" Yang Xiu screamed and rushed over, picking up Wen Youcai and crying out, "This is outrageous! My sister hit her brother! Everyone come and see!"

"You've killed someone! You owe us money!"

People around started pointing and whispering about Wen Luozhi, and Xie He seized the opportunity to start howling as her daughter had told her.

"Oh dear, this is really unfair! I had to endure that old woman's harassment during my postpartum period, and now she's trying to extort money from me!"

Xie He's voice grew louder and louder, and Aunt Sun and Aunt Wang also went up to talk about their family's misfortunes.

Finally, everyone looked at the two people on the ground with disdain.

"Pah! You're the heartless bastard! If you want money, go ask your grandma! Don't stay here and disturb my meal!"

The one speaking was the bearded man. He had been eating here for the past few days and was very satisfied with the food and service.

The owner wasn't the stingy type; he wanted to come here often so that no one would come asking for money every few days and ruin his meal.

The students at the academy also expressed extreme contempt for the two men's behavior, with some even composing satirical poems to ridicule them.

Yan Che looked at Wen Zijin with some sympathy in the courtyard, never imagining that they had such a hard childhood.

He truly regretted ever scolding Wen Luozhi before; it turns out that the little girl almost died as a child.

No wonder that whenever he talked to Wen Zijin about his willful and foolish younger sister, Wen Zijin never blamed him, but only felt self-reproach and heartache.

Some of the onlookers seemed to empathize with them and stepped forward to comfort them, while others began spitting at Wen Youcai and his companion.

"If you want money, go ask your third uncle. Why are you clinging to your second uncle who was abused, separated from you, and cut off from your family?"

"That's right, no matter how much money someone else has, it's not yours!"

"Your grandmother is such a wicked old woman! She almost killed that young boss while he was still in the womb!"

These past few days they've all been coming here to buy things, and they're all incredibly impressed to find out that the shop is run by that delicate young lady.

That girl was pretty, spoke sweetly, and was good at business, often giving them discounts, so they all liked her.

Now that I know how pitiful she is, I can't help but feel sorry for her and want to say a few words in her defense.

Yang Xiu endured the strange looks and vicious accusations from those around her, and she glared venomously at Wen Luozhi, who had a calm expression.

It's all because of her! If her husband hadn't been lying on the ground, she wouldn't have been the one being pointed at and gossiped about by these people.

They might have already taken the money and left to avoid trouble! She really shouldn't have come out!

Yang Xiu abandoned Wen Youcai and charged toward Wen Luozhi with a loud shout.

However, before she even reached Wen Luozhi, a gleaming long knife was already pressed against her neck.

"Hmph, daring to try and hurt someone in broad daylight! Come with me to the yamen!"

Yang Xiu was terrified and explained in a trembling voice, "No! No... no, sir! It was this little hussy who hit my husband first!"

"Oh, I almost forgot about the other one," the officer holding Yang Xiu whistled at another officer at the table. The officer put down the bowl of ice jelly he was holding, picked up a knife, and walked over.

"Let's go! You've lost your mind causing trouble!" He kicked Wen Youcai on the ground, dragged him up, and led him towards the yamen.

"I'm innocent, Your Honor! That wretched girl hit me! So many people saw it! They can testify!"

"Isn't that right? Isn't that right!" He turned his neck and shouted at the people eating, but no one paid any attention to him.

The two officers, each escorting one of them, left somewhat reluctantly.

They were planning to eat more! That girl's family really knew how to handle things; the dishes were all served perfectly and tasted absolutely delicious.

If it weren't for those two clueless fools, they would have eaten every last bit of food on the table.

Wen Youcai and Yang Xiu screamed all the way, their hearts filled with fear and dread. They had never been to such a terrifying place before! They should have checked the almanac before going out today!

What should we do now!

Upon arriving at the yamen, the two were immediately imprisoned. Wen Youcai trembled with fear as he looked at the emaciated prisoner in the cell next to him.

"Ah! Husband! A rat! A huge rat!" Yang Xiu hid behind him, her finger trembling as she pointed to the dark corner.

The damp, musty smell, along with the prisoners' half-dead groans, nearly drove Wen Youcai to the brink of collapse.

He shook the prison door and shouted at the jailers, "Let me out! Let me out! I haven't committed a crime!"

The jailer slammed his knife against the cell door, startling him so much that he quickly withdrew his hand.

"If you're innocent, why are you locked up? If you want to get out, have your family bring some money to pay for it."

The jailer lazily returned to his seat. The two men had already been informed by their superiors that they would only be released if someone offered them money that he deemed appropriate.

Yang Xiu burst into tears in terror. Where would she find the money to exchange for them? Would she die here?

Annoyed by her crying, Wen Youcai slapped her across the face. "All you do is cry! You should have taken me with you when that bitch hit me!"

"Otherwise, how could I have ended up locked up in this deadly place!"
