Chapter 318 Deterioration
Chapter 318 Deterioration
"what?"
"The child's blood test results... are high again. The doctor recommends immediate hospitalization for observation." The person on the other end paused before continuing.
The phone felt a bit heavy in my hand.
"It's gotten higher again?" A surge of anger welled up inside me, but I managed to suppress it.
My head buzzed, I felt a little dizzy, and my legs felt unsteady.
Not far away, Xiao Xiaotian was being held in his grandfather's arms, giggling.
I gripped my phone tightly and lowered my voice: "Okay, I'll be right there."
After hanging up the phone, I took a few deep breaths.
“Yafei,” I tried to make my voice sound normal, “the hospital called, we have to go there.”
The smile on her face vanished instantly, and she turned to look at me: "What's wrong?"
"There's a slight problem with the test results." I didn't dare to be too direct.
Song Yafei's arm, which was supporting Xiao Xiaotian, trembled slightly. His father seemed to realize something as well, and his face immediately darkened.
"Grandpa, I'm fine!" Little Tian patted his grandpa's shoulder with his chubby little hands.
Song Yafei's lips were pressed tightly together, almost bloodless. After several seconds, she finally murmured, "Let's go."
On the way to the hospital, the car was eerily quiet.
She sat in the passenger seat without saying a word.
The steering wheel was sticky with sweat in my hands, and my mind was a complete mess.
Upon arriving at the hospital, the procedures were completed quickly, and the nurses immediately took Xiaoxiaotian for his examination.
Song Yafei and I sat side by side on a bench in the corridor.
Her father rubbed his hands together and paced back and forth beside her.
"Zhang Tian!" Song Yafei's voice suddenly rang out, devoid of emotion, "Is the baby not doing well?"
“It’s okay,” I said, startled, and looked at her.
"Nothing?" Her eyes reddened, and her voice was cold. "Are you hiding something from me?"
"It's really nothing."
"Why would someone be hospitalized if they're fine?"
She turned her head abruptly, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Don't lie to me," she suddenly said, her voice rising.
"During the two years you disappeared, I carried him, gave birth to him, and raised him all by myself! Now you're back, but he's leaving again..."
"It will be alright!"
"The indicators are a bit high, let's control them first and then expedite the matching process..."
"Easier said than done?" Her heart-wrenching expression made my stomach feel both bloated and aching.
"If you don't pull yourself together, how will you take care of him?"
I stood up and pointed at her: "Song Yafei, do you know? I was almost at my wit's end back then, which is why I left..."
Her father quickly came over and stood between us: "Let's all keep quiet, Xiaotian is still inside!"
I pushed his arm away and turned to walk outside.
As I walked to the corner of the corridor, I took a deep drag on my cigarette, but my frustration didn't lessen at all.
Just then, the phone rang at an inopportune moment; it was Lin Qiuran calling.
"Brother Tian, what's going on? I heard Xiao Tian is in the hospital again?" His voice was a little anxious.
"Yes, I just arrived."
"How about it? Do you want me to come over and help?"
"No need," I said in a low voice.
"You go ahead with your work, I can handle things here."
"Okay, I'll call you if you need anything, don't worry."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, I hung up the phone.
When I looked up, Song Yafei was standing a few steps away, staring intently at the cigarette in my hand.
"You're smoking again?" Her tone was barbed. "Your stomach has only been better for a few days, and you're already ruining yourself like this?"
I couldn't be bothered with her and turned to walk towards the examination room.
Not long after, the doctor came out, and he didn't look well.
I'm wondering what's going on. Is it really hopeless?
"Mr. Zhang, Ms. Song, the child's condition is not optimistic. The white blood cell count is very high, and chemotherapy needs to be prepared immediately."
Song Yafei swayed and almost lost her balance.
Her father quickly supported her, tears streaming down his face: "Doctor, how could this child be so young..." His voice choked with emotion, unable to continue.
My mind went blank, and my throat was so dry I couldn't speak.
"Chemotherapy...is it risky?" I had to use a lot of strength to ask the question.
The doctor nodded gravely: "There are risks, and the child is currently in a weak condition."
"What should we do?" Song Yafei's voice trembled violently, on the verge of tears.
The doctor sighed, "Right now, we can only try chemotherapy to control the situation and bring the indicators down as soon as possible. If we delay any longer, it will only become more dangerous."
I clenched my fists so tightly that my nails dug into my flesh, but I couldn't feel any pain.
"Okay, then chemotherapy it is," I said through gritted teeth.
Song Yafei glanced at me, said nothing more, turned around, and threw herself into her father's arms. Her shoulders were shaking violently, and suppressed sobs came out intermittently.
I stood beside her, watching her trembling back, and my heart ached.
That evening, Xiao Xiaotian was settled in the ward. His face was pale, but when he saw me, he still managed a smile.
"Dad, Grandpa said he'll buy me lots and lots of toys when I get better!"
"Yes, Grandpa loves Xiaoxiaotian the most." His voice was soft, and his eyes shone.
I reached out and touched his soft hair, and my nose felt a little sore.
Song Yafei sat on the edge of the bed without saying a word, peeling an apple with her head down, her hands trembling as she broke the peel several times.
Her father stood by the window, his back to us, his shoulders twitching occasionally.
In the small hospital room, they were immersed in their grief, and the air felt stifling.
I looked at them, and felt empty inside.
A young nurse came in to change my dressing. As she passed by me, she stopped and said in a low voice, "Mr. Zhang, you don't look too well. It would be best if you could take some time to get a check-up."
"I?"
"Um,"
"You weren't like that before... Could it be that your old problem has relapsed?"
"Oh, I'll check tomorrow." My heart skipped a beat, and that discomfort I had been trying to suppress resurfaced.
"You don't look well, you absolutely have to go!"
"Okay, go."
After I sent the nurse away, my stomach started to ache slightly.
It was late at night, and Xiao Xiaotian was not sleeping soundly. His brows were furrowed and he kept tossing and turning.
I stayed by the bedside, afraid to close my eyes.
Song Yafei leaned back in the chair next to her, probably too tired, and fell asleep.
"Zhang Tian, thank you for your hard work. Please go and take a look tomorrow."
Her father moved to the empty seat next to me, his voice hoarse.
"You need to get better so you can take care of the children."
"Mmm," I replied.
"Back then... I made the wrong choice because of my health..."
I waved my hand and comforted her, "It's all in the past, don't think about it."
He wanted to say something more, but then a series of hurried footsteps came from the corridor, followed by a loud knocking on the ward door. Before he could answer, the door was pushed open.
I looked up and saw a man in a suit standing at the door, his hair a little messy, leaning against the door frame and panting heavily.
"Is Miss Song here?" he asked urgently, his voice trembling with obvious panic. "The Song family... something has happened to the Song family!"
