Chapter 24 Bloodbath with Baron
Chapter 24 Bloodbath with Baron
The village of Balangai is built against the mountain, with its entrance located at the foot of the mountain. In front of it is a wide field of farmland, where the main force of the Free Army is lying in ambush behind the field ridges, exchanging fire with the natives from a distance.
The village has about forty wooden houses scattered on the hillside, and in the very center of the village stands a two-story stone fortress, covering an area of 200 square meters. Its walls are thick, making it a strategic location that is easy to defend and difficult to attack.
At this moment, the indigenous chieftain also realized that he was about to be attacked, so he personally led his men over to try to plug the gap.
Holding a spear, Chen Feng moved through the crowd with ease, as if possessed by Zhao Yun. The spear tip gleamed coldly, and any native who dared to stop him was pierced through the body by his spear and fell to the ground with a scream.
"General, watch your back!"
As soon as Wang Liang exclaimed, Chen Feng felt a chill run down his spine.
He instinctively turned to the side, his wrist snapping sharply, and his spear precisely parried the scimitar that was slashing at him. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a local boy of about ten years old drawing his bow and nocking an arrow at the window of the wooden house next to him, the arrowhead pointing directly at his throat!
call out!
A cold arrow came hurtling in, accompanied by a piercing whistle.
"Be careful!"
Ding Junkai, standing behind, stared at the arrow gleaming coldly and couldn't help but let out a low shout as he pulled the trigger of his newly loaded rifle.
"court death!"
Chen Feng roared, veins bulging on his arms, and hurled his spear high into the air.
The spear tip seemed to have eyes, accurately striking the arrow and splitting it in two. Its momentum did not diminish at all; it shot out like a meteor and pierced the boy's chest!
Almost at the same instant, a shot rang out.
The bullet struck the boy squarely in the forehead, exploding into a bloody hole the size of a thumb.
At this point, the village was in complete chaos.
The shortcomings of the Springfield M1861 rifle became apparent; it proved ineffective in close-quarters combat and was less useful than the shortbow in the hands of the untrained man.
The Free Army soldiers had not been trained for long and had no tactics or skills in the melee; several of them fell in no time.
If Chen Feng hadn't led the charge and drawn most of the firepower, these people would probably have scattered and fled for their lives long ago.
"This can't go on!"
Chen Feng felt a surge of anxiety. He punched the old indigenous woman in front of him, snatched the wood-chopping knife from her hand, and narrowly deflected a cold arrow that shot from the shadows.
They underestimated the strength of the Balangai tribe.
They originally thought they only needed to deal with those fifty-odd strong men, but they never expected that the indigenous people would be mobilized for war. Not only teenagers, but even elderly people in their sixties and seventies took up arms to resist.
"General, let Tian Gang and the others launch a general offensive!" Wang Liang was panting heavily. His whole body was already soaked in blood, and there was a deep wound on his left forearm that exposed the bone.
"All-out attack!" Chen Feng knew he couldn't wait any longer. Taking advantage of the moment when there were no enemies in front of him, he took out the whistle from his waist and blew it loudly.
The whistle instantly pierced the battlefield and reached the village entrance.
Kong Yunfei suddenly stood up and shouted, "Brothers, the general has given the order! Charge!"
"Rush!"
"Kill them!"
"revenge!"
The shouts were deafening, and the soldiers jumped over the fence and rushed into the village like a tidal wave.
The locals on the front lines were without a commander. Although they put up a stubborn resistance by relying on the houses and fences, the muzzle-loading rifles had a slow rate of fire. Under Tian Gang's command, the soldiers took turns providing cover and quickly drove the locals to the vicinity of the stone house in the center of the village.
Seeing that the frontal defense had been breached and Chen Feng was closing in from the rear, the leader panicked and quickly changed tactics, roaring as he ordered his remaining followers to retreat toward the stone house.
"Chase!"
Seeing that they were trying to escape, Chen Feng naturally wouldn't let them go and chased after them.
bang bang bang...
A series of gunshots suddenly rang out; it was the indigenous people hiding in the stone houses, using the doors and windows as firing ports to snipe the enemy.
Chen Feng reacted extremely quickly, dodging sharply to the side, but the bullet still grazed his right shoulder, spraying blood everywhere.
The soldiers following behind him were not so lucky; after this round of sniper fire, two more men fell to the ground.
Taking advantage of the fact that they were suppressed by firepower, the indigenous chieftain led the last remaining troops to hide in the stone house in a sorry state.
The soldiers, their eyes red with fury, tried to continue their charge, but were forced back by the dense barrage of bullets fired from inside the stone house, making it impossible for them to get close.
"Damn it, they've actually become cowards!"
Kong Yunfei, hiding behind a wooden pillar, cursed angrily. He then used the terrain for cover and quickly circled around the stone house to Chen Feng's side: "General, what should we do? The locals are hiding inside. If we show our faces, they'll open fire."
Chen Feng was also getting anxious, but he forced himself to calm down and stared intently at the stone house.
This stone house is built in the center of the village, and is made entirely of thick stone blocks, making it look just like a small bunker.
Apart from a narrow door at the front that only allows two people to pass side by side, the rest of the area has only windows the size of a washbasin. Let alone charging in, even climbing in would be as difficult as climbing to the sky.
"We can't launch a direct attack!" Wang Liang squatted on the ground, gritted his teeth, tore off a trouser leg, and haphazardly wrapped it around his bleeding forearm.
Chen Feng watched for a while, then a glint of light flashed in his eyes. He immediately burst into laughter: "They're hiding inside turtle shells, they're courting death! Have the brothers find some dry straw piles and burn all these houses down to suffocate them."
Upon receiving the order, the soldiers immediately sprang into action, and soon several surrounding houses were ablaze.
Thick smoke instantly flooded into the stone house, followed by a chorus of coughs and the exasperated roars of the locals.
Chen Feng smirked and shouted, "Brothers, load your ammunition! Aim your guns at the gate! If anyone dares to rush out, shoot them all! Don't let a single one escape!"
No sooner had he finished speaking than two locals, unable to bear the smoke and heat, rushed out of the gate.
Bang bang bang.....
Several gunshots rang out simultaneously, and the two natives didn't even have time to scream before they fell straight into a pool of blood.
Upon seeing this, the indigenous chieftain inside the house kept shouting.
Chen Feng couldn't tell if this was a plea for mercy or a shout, and he didn't care to.
Seeing that the smoke inside the house was getting thicker and thicker, the indigenous chieftain finally realized he could no longer hide and led his men out of the house.
bang bang bang...
Bullets rained down, instantly turning the foremost tribesmen into sieves, and those behind them were not spared either, all falling into pools of blood.
As the smoke gradually dissipated, Chen Feng walked slowly to the stone house. Looking at the corpses scattered on the ground, he said with interest, "In future battles, we must never imitate these natives. If they sensed something was wrong, they would simply flee, and we wouldn't be able to catch them. Instead, they hid themselves in a dead end, and even the Heavenly King himself couldn't save them."
"clear!"
All five class leaders gathered around and nodded vigorously at the same time.
Chen Feng glanced at everyone: "We still made some mistakes this time. Who can tell us?"
Fifth Squad Leader Wang Liang answered first: "The main problem was that we misjudged the enemy's strength. We didn't expect the locals to be able to fight as a whole."
Squad leader Tian Gang added, "Our rifles have a slow rate of fire. Although we have more rifles than the natives, we still can't maintain sustained firepower."
"Our training is still insufficient; our loading speed is even slower than some of the locals." Third Squad Leader Ren Dayong's voice was hoarse. He was rather unlucky; he had been shot in the thigh and was currently wrapped in burlap.
Chen Feng thought that since he had limped over, it meant that no bones or arteries were injured, so he wasn't too worried. He turned to look at Kong Yunfei, the second squad leader, who hadn't spoken yet.
"They've all said it, what else can I say?" Kong Yunfei scratched the back of his head and grinned.
Chen Feng chuckled, then his smile faded, his tone becoming incredibly serious: "The most important thing is the lack of coordinated combat awareness! In the chaos of battle, everyone fought individually, failing to coordinate offense and defense, which allowed the indigenous people's advantage of being able to fight as a whole to be fully utilized. Subsequent training must strengthen squad coordination, ensuring seamless integration of firing, covering, and charging!"
