Chapter 61 After the War
Chapter 61 After the War
As dawn broke, Lang Cang led the patrolling beastmen back to the cave. Behind the cave, several beastmen dragged Lang Cang by the legs and threw the spoils together.
They had carefully patrolled the tribe's territory again, and the few wolves that had escaped had been killed by Lang Cang and the male beastmen.
At this moment, Tu Lin was leading several orcs to clear the open space in front of the cave.
They poured water on the snow to wash away the bloodstains, otherwise the strong smell of blood would attract more wild animals. Their tribe was in such a state that they could not afford another battle.
A fierce battle almost destroyed everything they had set up, and three of the five earthen kilns that Lin Baiyan and his group had built were also destroyed.
He looked at the damaged earthen kiln with a pang of heartache; it was something they had painstakingly built.
The orcs dumped all the salt and supplies that Lang Cang and his group had brought back from the sea into the innermost cave. They didn't have time to sort them out now; they would do it when Lin Baiyan had time.
The giant wolf transformed into human form and walked at the forefront of the male beastmen. Lin Baiyan suddenly noticed that in just about a month, Lang Cang seemed to have grown taller. He was originally about 1.8 meters tall, but now he looked to be almost 1.9 meters tall, with broader shoulders and a more upright posture.
His face, still bearing the chilling aura of someone who had just experienced a harsh and stern moment, seemed to shield him from all the wind and snow in the world.
And he did indeed do it.
Lin Baiyan recalled the words Lang Cang had said when he looked into Lang Cang's eyes earlier.
"I will protect you." That voice seemed to echo in his ears once again.
Lin Baiyan stared blankly at Lang Cang's slowly approaching figure until he was right in front of him, at which point he suddenly snapped out of his daze.
"How is it?" Lin Baiyan asked, trying to cover up his misunderstanding.
Lang Cang nodded to him, "We've already killed those wolves, so don't worry."
Lin Baiyan breathed a sigh of relief. Wolves are the most vengeful creatures. If they are not killed in one blow, they will become endless hidden dangers in the future.
"Why did they choose us?" Lin Baiyan asked, puzzled.
Looking at the young man's confused expression, Lang Cang said calmly, "They're treating us like reserve food."
Lin Baiyan's eyes widened suddenly. "It really is just as I thought!"
He frowned. "That doesn't make sense either. Wolves are cunning and clever. Their numbers are about the same as ours, but their strength is vastly different. Why would they risk attacking a tribe?"
Wolf Cang said in a deep voice, "Didn't you notice that prey is particularly scarce after the earth cracks?"
Lin Baiyan thought about it carefully and it seemed to be true. They had fled all the way from the south to this place, and the prey had indeed become fewer and fewer.
Lang Cang said, "It might be caused by a ground fissure."
The earthquake caused the deaths of a large number of animals, reducing their numbers and making prey even harder to find. That's why the wolf pack took the risk of attacking these "lone" orcs.
Lin Baiyan asked with some concern, "Won't there be other wolves and tigers after that?"
If they come back again, they'll really be stuck here.
Wolf Cang shook his head. "There aren't any around the tribe yet. I've already sent Bear Fly and Leopard Road to scout further out."
The fewer orcs sent to investigate, the better. Leopard Road is a black panther orc, extremely fast and good at hiding, but his combat strength is not obvious.
Xiong Fei is a formidable individual fighter, and the two orcs complement each other perfectly for this mission.
"This was my fault. I should have noticed the wolves earlier."
Wolf Cang looked at the animal skin wrapped around the young man's right arm, a barely perceptible hint of annoyance flashing in his eyes.
Looking at the big wolf in front of him, Lin Baiyan felt as if the two invisible ears on its head were about to droop down.
Lin Baiyan stood on tiptoe and patted the person in front of him, comforting him, "This can't be blamed on you alone."
Lin Baiyan didn't want to put all the blame on him, so he looked seriously into Lang Cang's eyes and said, "We are a tribe as a whole, so don't take all the responsibility on yourself."
Lang Cang watched as he racked his brains trying to comfort him, a soft light flashing in his dark eyes.
"Baiyan, come and see our Rainbow Phoenix Chicken!" Tu Lin called out to Lin Baiyan from the Rainbow Phoenix Chicken shed in the distance.
Lin Baiyan quickly replied, "I'll go see what Tu Lin wanted to see me about?"
When he arrived at the chicken coop, he saw Tu Lin standing there with a worried look on his face. "What's wrong, Uncle Tu Lin?"
Tu Lin sighed. He stood a little further away and pointed to the colorful phoenix chickens inside. "Look, they've all huddled in the corner. Wolf Cloud just fed them, but they won't come over to eat."
Lin Baiyan looked at the listless, droopy chickens in the coop, their feathers drooping down in a pitiful state.
"It's nothing, he was probably scared by the wolves, he'll be fine in a couple of days," Lin Baiyan said.
Tu Lin breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this. These few colorful phoenix chickens looked insignificant, not as many as the prey they hunted at once, but Tu Lin valued them highly.
If the breeding business can continue, they will have a guarantee in the future, just as Lin Baiyan said, and the cubs will be able to eat eggs from time to time.
"That's good. I was just worried they'd die," Tu Lin replied.
By this time, Hu Qing and his men had already set up a large stone pot on the flat ground outside the cave. The tribesmen had just gone through a fierce battle, and now was the time to harvest their prey. The fresh wolf meat was skinned, processed, and cut into large chunks. They then added potatoes and sweet potatoes and started to stew it together.
At this point, people didn't care about whether the food was good or not; filling their stomachs was the most important thing. The beastmen had been on high alert since last night, but no one complained or showed any signs of fatigue.
After a bowl of hot soup, Lin Baiyan felt completely revived. "I've never tasted stew so delicious!"
This wolf meat wasn't sour like he'd heard before; it tasted just like ordinary meat.
Adding scallions and ginger, two essential ingredients for removing fishy smells, and then garnishing with Sichuan peppercorns, will basically eliminate any fishy odor.
Lu Xiao ate with relish, "These are my spoils!"
He happily ate even more.
This was his first time participating in such a large-scale battle. The sub-beastmen generally did not go out hunting, let alone experience a battle that could be described as a life-or-death struggle.
The male beastmen, who expended the most energy, ate without even lifting their heads.
Seeing that the first pot wasn't enough, Quanling quickly set up a second pot. Since everyone had escaped death this time, Lin Baiyan had specifically instructed that everyone should be made to eat their fill.
After everyone had eaten and drunk their fill, their strength had mostly recovered.
