Chapter 0017: The Best Soldier in the Recruit Company
Chapter 0017: The Best Soldier in the Recruit Company
The day of target practice finally arrived.
The new recruits lined up at the shooting range with nervousness. The first group of recruits had already taken their positions and, under the command of their squad leader, began their first shooting practice in the manner they had been trained before.
Zheng Yingqi and his squad were in the second batch of target practice, so they were still watching the first wave of their comrades' performance as spectators.
Zheng Yingqi looked around, observing the expressions of his comrades, and smiled knowingly. Finally, he looked at Cheng Cai and Xu Sanduo. Cheng Cai stood tall and proud, showing no signs of stage fright, but Zheng Yingqi, who knew him well, could still tell from Cheng Cai's tense body that he was nervous.
Xu Sanduo was muttering something to himself. Even if Zheng Yingqi couldn't hear him, he could guess with his eyes closed that the guy was reciting the shooting instructions. There was no target practice scene in the TV series, so he didn't know what level Xu Sanduo was at, but Zheng Yingqi estimated that he shouldn't be too bad—after all, Xu Sanduo had been practicing the various shooting movements with extra care during the extra training these past few days.
Wu Liuyi's sharp eyes scanned the platoon. Seeing the nervous expressions on the recruits' faces, he reassured them, "Don't be nervous. Target practice in basic training doesn't count towards your scores. This is just to let you get a feel for the atmosphere. Don't be too tense!"
So it wasn't counted in the grade...
Cheng Cai finally breathed a sigh of relief. He had been stealing glances at Zheng Yingqi, and seeing Zheng Yingqi's nonchalant attitude, he had been feeling uneasy for a long time, fearing that he would be crushed by Zheng Yingqi in the shooting competition. But he didn't expect that it wouldn't count towards his score—so what?
"Ready!"
As the squad leaders gave their commands, the second batch of new recruits began to take their places. Zheng Yingqi stepped forward and prepared in the standard posture. Wu Liuyi stepped forward to check the guns of the new recruits in the squad one by one. When it was Xu Sanduo's turn, he saw that the spare magazine was out of bullets, so he turned around and went to the ammunition box next to him to get bullets.
In just a short while, Xu Sanduo found himself with nothing to do. He turned around with his gun in hand, and the line of fire that swept across the gun included the entire squad of new recruits waiting to be fired. The recruits instinctively began to dodge, but only three of them did not move.
Cheng Cai, Zheng Yingqi, and Gao Cheng.
Shi Jin, who was supervising from the side, stepped forward, grabbed the trigger, and disarmed the gun.
"Platoon leader, my gun is out of bullets." Xu Sanduo said to Shi Jin with a simple smile. Shi Jin quickly checked the gun and unloaded a bullet from the 81-barreled barrel.
Xu Sanduo turned pale with fright. Cheng Cai and Zheng Yingqi, who were standing next to him, were also startled. They had bravely refrained from dodging because they knew there were no bullets in the gun, but who knew that it actually did!
Gao Cheng strode over, glaring angrily at Xu Sanduo: "Xu Sanduo, are you thinking about something out of the blue?"
Xu Sanduo had lost even the will to agree; all he felt now was a deep sense of lingering fear—his squad leader had repeatedly emphasized safety awareness, and he was terrified that if he accidentally discharged his weapon and injured his comrades…
Seeing the guy's cowardly appearance, Gao Cheng didn't even have the heart to scold him. He was secretly relieved. If something had gone wrong and his grades had been criticized, he would have been in trouble just for being ranked first!
"Continue!" Gao Cheng said with a dark face, then walked to the side.
Wu Liuyi glared angrily at Xu Sanduo, who had caused the accident, wishing he could devour the kid alive. In the end, he suppressed his anger and loaded the stupid guy with bullets.
"Ready to fire!"
The squad leaders began giving orders, and the new recruits all lay down. Zheng Yingqi took a standard stance, aimed his rifle at the target 100 meters away.
Bang
Zheng Yingqi began firing. After the first shot, feeling the recoil, he felt more confident.
bang bang
The rhythmic gunfire rang out, and the remaining four bullets were quickly fired from the barrel.
Wu Liuyi stared at Zheng Yingqi in surprise. He hadn't expected Zheng Yingqi to fire all five bullets so quickly. Most of the new recruits had only fired two bullets at this point, and Cheng Cai, who had been arguing with Zheng Yingqi, had only fired three shots.
You can't tell the results from a 100-meter distance, but judging from Zheng Yingqi's calm expression, Wu Liuyi was certain that this guy's results couldn't be too bad—three out of five bullets should be a no-brainer, right?
After seeing Zheng Yingqi finish shooting and stand up, Gao Cheng held up his binoculars to check Zheng Yingqi's hit count. There weren't many recruits in the recruit company that he had his eye on, but Zheng Yingqi and Cheng Cai were the two he would absolutely not let go of.
"Did they all hit the target?"
After seeing the target clearly, Gao Cheng's eyes widened. He had thought that this guy must have poor mental fortitude to have fired so quickly, and that maybe two or three bullets would hit the target. But he didn't expect that all five bullets hit the target. After examining the bullet holes more closely, Gao Cheng was even more surprised.
「8、7、8、9、10?42环?」
Gao Cheng was shocked as he calculated the score. For the soldiers of the Seventh Company, a score of 42 on the 100-meter target was barely considered half-good, but for new recruits, especially those shooting for the first time, this score was almost unbelievable!
Most importantly, this thing is fast! And its shooting is fairly rhythmic!
By this time, most of the new recruits had finished their training, and Gao Cheng looked toward Cheng Cai's target position.
Four shots hit the target.
Gao Cheng actually breathed a sigh of relief. This score was only considered good at the normal level for a new recruit! Looking at Xu Sanduo's target, which didn't even have a single bullet hole, Gao Cheng silently shook his head. This guy was just as he expected!
While the new recruits were getting ready, Wu Liuyi quickly walked up to Zheng Yingqi: "Zheng Yingqi, why are you fighting so fast? Are you flustered?"
"Report, squad leader, no! I was very steady when I fired." Zheng Yingqi answered loudly. This was indeed his first time firing a gun, but for some reason, he felt no nervousness at all. Instead, he was very calm. Although he did not know his score, Zheng Yingqi was sure that all five of his bullets hit the target.
"Stable?" Wu Liu laughed angrily. "Wait until we hand out the target papers before you say you're stable." He had never seen such an arrogant guy. Only veterans who had trained for a year dared to say their shooting was stable. How dare a new recruit who had just started shooting say he was stable?
Cheng Cai glanced at Zheng Yingqi, a competitive spirit rising in his heart. Although he was slow at shooting, he was confident that he had hit the target at least three times. He was now waiting to compare with Zheng Yingqi when the target paper was handed out to see who could hit the target more times.
Zheng Yingqi stepped aside, gazing at the target paper in the distance, silently wondering what kind of result he would achieve in his first time shooting.
Meanwhile, Shi Jin sent someone over to collect the target papers. This was the recruits' first time shooting, and the target papers had considerable commemorative value. Moreover, those who hit the target high naturally had shooting talent. As Gao Cheng had instructed, they needed to be taken seriously.
