Chapter 512 - 66: The Boss and the Secretary
Chapter 512 - 66: The Boss and the Secretary
After parting with Qu Fulan, Mei was called by someone. Turning around, she saw a girl she didn’t recognize. An Li had mustered up the courage to approach Mei, but upon seeing the other party’s expression, she knew that Mei hadn’t recognized her. It made sense, considering Mei was a busy person, and they had only met once before. Important people often forget such things.
An Li didn’t mind being forgotten by Mei. She just couldn’t help but step forward to remind Mei about the kind of person Qu Fulan was.
"My name is An Li. We met once abroad, Mei. I’m interrupting abruptly, but it’s only to give you a kind reminder."
Mei took off her glasses, glanced at the woman in front of her, and although she didn’t recognize her, she returned a faint smile, "What’s the matter?"
An Li then recounted the story of Qu Fulan being kept.
"Mei, I deeply respect you as a senior, so I’ve taken an interest in some of your preferences. Knowing your principles, I couldn’t stand by while seeing you being deceived..."
Mei curled her lips into a slight smile and directly interrupted, "I think you misunderstood."
An Li: "...Misunderstood what?"
Mei smiled, her expression polite yet distant, "Thank you for the reminder, but let me give you a piece of advice: don’t be too presumptuous."
With that, Mei nodded to her, put her glasses back on, and turned to leave.
An Li’s expression wasn’t good. Who would feel great after kindly warning someone only to have it unappreciated?
Being called presumptuous? She was just giving a kind reminder. If she had known it would be like this, she wouldn’t have said anything. When Mei finds out herself, who knows how she’ll feel.
Don’t think she doesn’t know; Mei is still single at her age because of a husband’s betrayal. Her hatred for mistresses is likely stronger than her own.
...
Qu Fulan had successfully secured a collaboration and planned to cook soup for Pei Ji’an that evening.
When Pei Ji’an came home, he heard sounds from the kitchen. He changed his shoes first and then headed towards the kitchen, untying his tie.
Seeing the woman busy in the kitchen, he raised an eyebrow and took long strides inside.
Qu Fulan was busy washing vegetables, and the sound of the running water kept her from hearing the door open, unaware of his return until his deep voice sounded beside her.
"What are you doing?"
Qu Fulan was startled and spoke with lingering fear, "You scared me, walking so silently."
Pei Ji’an shook his head helplessly, "My fault."
"Indeed, so your punishment is to wash the vegetables." Qu Fulan turned to check on the soup.
Without saying anything, Pei Ji’an washed his hands and then continued washing the vegetables. Noticing the variety of dishes she was preparing, he asked, "What’s the special occasion today for such an elaborate meal?"
She usually disliked cooking, but if she did, her skills wouldn’t be poor.
"Hey, I secured a collaboration today, making a candlelight dinner to thank you," Qu Fulan laughed.
"Congratulations." He offered his congratulations earnestly.
But then Qu Fulan said, "Do you know what Mei finally told me?"
Before he could speak, she eagerly continued, "Mei watched our studio’s video and said if it weren’t for the quality of the video, she wouldn’t have chosen to collaborate with us."
"Assistant Cai looked into her, and she has her principles for dealing with things. If she said that, it shows she genuinely likes your work." Pei Ji’an stated the fact.
There are always people in this world unafraid of power, especially capable ones. Knowing Mei’s principles, if she didn’t like it herself, no one could force her.
"But without your introduction, I wouldn’t even have the chance to meet her." Qu Fulan knew the reality well.
Without connections or backing, her studio could continue, but it would develop more slowly, gradually progressing until she accumulated enough experience in her forties to excel in her work.
Qu Fulan said it was a candlelight dinner, and it truly was. While Pei Ji’an took a shower, she set up the dining area beautifully.
With candles, red wine, and even the sound of romantic violin music.
Occasional romance can increase the chemistry between couples.
"Thank you for all your help and care, both in work and life. Sometimes I don’t say it, but I keep it in my heart." Qu Fulan raised her wine glass to him.
Her heartfelt words naturally pleased Pei Ji’an, and they clinked glasses in a toast.
There was steak, pasta, barbecue, and lettuce. Romance was there, and so was the homey feel. The home’s romance couldn’t compare to a restaurant’s setup, but comfort was the priority at home.
However, under the warm light, Qu Fulan looked at the man across from her and suddenly felt a sense of déjà vu.
As if they had once sat together enjoying a candlelight dinner like this.
But it wasn’t the last candlelight dinner.
The last candlelight dinner they had was set up by the butler and Manager Cai, but at that time, she had proposed breaking up.
If it wasn’t the last time, then where did that familiar feeling come from?
"What’s wrong?" he asked, seeing her lost in thought.
Qu Fulan chuckled softly, "I just feel like we enjoyed a romantic candlelight dinner together before, maybe I’m confused."
Because before today, they had no decent candlelight dinners. The last one, she proposed breaking up, and before that, there weren’t any.
Pei Ji’an didn’t dwell on it either.
For him, the most memorable were childhood memories, some she had already forgotten.
The girl who played with him in the mud had been a light in his lonely world back then.
Even after all these years, he recognized her the moment he saw her at the interview.
"Hey, what are you thinking about?" Qu Fulan waved her hand in front of his eyes.
Just as Pei Ji’an was about to speak, the phone rang.
The interrupted topic wasn’t resumed.
That night, as usual, Qu Fulan lay in the man’s arms to sleep, and surprisingly, she dreamed.
In her dream, she and he were dressed in ancient costumes, and she had to admit, they looked quite good.
And before them was the candlelight dinner.
The dream seemed ordinary up to this point, as it mirrored reality and wasn’t unusual for a dream.
But after the candlelight dinner in the dream, they shared a very romantic night, something that hadn’t happened in reality.
In the morning, when Qu Fulan woke up, she felt a bit awkward.
They say you dream of what you think about during the day, so dreaming about that... maybe she desired it deep down?
Perhaps, she wasn’t a single woman, after all. She had a boyfriend, and they often shared intimacy, just never taking it to the last step. The anticipation probably made the longing stronger.
"Why is your cheek a little red?" Pei Ji’an, dressed, came over and couldn’t help but touch her cheek with the back of his hand, "You have a fever?"
Qu Fulan: "..."
